Hmong
I chose Hmong. I was torn between Hmong or Mexican, but a few
weekends ago I went to a play with my aunt and she is mentoring a student that
went with us, and she was Hmong. I thought it was very cool. She was saying how
she was going to a ceremony for her sister’s new baby, because in their culture
they like to welcome babies with a ceremony. So I am staring to get a feel for
their culture. I am looking forward to studying the Hmong into more
detail.

This is a picture of Hmong people.
Hmong people came from China and Southeast Asia. They speak Hmong, which is
also known as Miao-Yao languages. About 1.2 million Hmong people moved to
Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and the eastern parts of Myanmar (Burma).Hmong people
were broken up into 18 different clans. The Chang,
Cheng, Chute, Fang, Hang, Her, Khang, Kong, Kue, Lee, Lor, Moua, Pha, Thao,
Vang, Vue, Xiong, and Yang. They lived with extended family, and farmed on the
land they had. They enjoyed many crafts and were amazing sewers! Hmong people
use sewing as a way to express themselves, culture, and history.

Hmong people used to be very strong, independent, hard-working,
resourceful, courageous people. They sacrificed their lives, homes and normalcy.
They are now all over the world. There are a total of 4-5 million Hmong people.
3 million live in China, 1,068,189 in Vietnam, 460,000 in Laos, 260,073 in
America, 151,080 in Thailand, 15,000 in France, 2,190 in Australia, 1,500 in
French Guiana, 600 in Canada, 600 in Argentina, and 500 in Germany.
Most Hmong people still embrace their culture. Hmong people under 30
usually speak English as their first language and Hmong as their second. As they
get to be 30 it usually switches, and people over 30 speak Hmong as their first
language, and English as their second. The Hmong people came to America after
the Vietnam War, at the time the climate was humid tropical. The climate now is
humid subtropical. Here is a climate chart of Laos. In the Vietnam War, it was
the south against the north. The south were non-communists and was supported by
America, France, and Allies. The north were communists and Russia and China
supported them.
